Someone has tripped the magical alarms in the Element Temple. 

누군가 원소 신전에 있는 마법 경보기를 울렸습니다.

By the time you and the other monks arrive on the scene, you know you have a disaster on your hands. 

여러분과 승려들이 현장에 도착하면 해결해야 할 엄청난 재앙이 발생한 것을 알게 될 거예요. 

Overnight, four young apprentices broke into the temple’s inner chamber to steal the sacred element crystals. 

밤사이 네 명의 수습생이 원소의 결정체를 훔치러 신전 내 작은 방에 잠입했습니다. 

But when the alarm went off they panicked, 

그 순간 경보기가 울려 

and each of them swallowed the crystal they held right before they were caught. 

그들은 당황하기 시작했고 현장이 발각되기 직전 각자가 들고 있던 원석을 삼켰습니다.

With no idea how to control the crystals’ vast powers,

원소의 막강한 힘을 다룰 줄 모르는 그들은 

they’ll soon transform into uncontrollable elemental spirits. 

곧 통제 불가한 사대 정령으로 변할 위기에 처했습니다. 

Improbably enough, the old monk next to you has seen something similar happen before. 

희한하게도, 한 승려가 비슷한 광경을 목격한 적이 있었고

He explains: “You must determine who ate which crystal and get each into the proper containment field before they transform. 

그들이 정령으로 변하기 전에 누가 어떤 원석을 먹었는지 알아내서 그 힘을 억제하는 공간에 가둬야 한다고 했습니다.

The elements compel their masters: 

게다가 원소는 주인을 조종하는 능력이 있는데

those who ate the Earth and Water Crystals must speak the truth, while those who consumed Fire and Air must lie." 

땅과 물의 원소는 진실을 말하게 하고 불과 바람의 원소는 거짓말을 하게 한다고 했죠. 

The youths are too scared to confess their own transgressions. 

수습생들은 자백하는 게 너무 두려운 나머지 

Instead, they fall to accusing each other. 

서로를 고발하기 시작했습니다. 

“Rikku took the Water crystal!” Sumi blurts out. 

"리쿠가 물의 원석을 먹었어요" 수미가 얼떨결에 말했고 

Rikku interrupts angrily. “It was Bella, she stole the Fire crystal!” 

리쿠가 끼어들었어요 "벨라가 불의 원석을 훔쳤어요!" 

So Bella yells: “Jonah ate the Air crystal, I saw him!” 

벨라는 소리쳤죠 "요나가 바람의 원석을 먹는 것을 봤어요." 

Jonah looks up timidly and shakes his head. “I… I don’t know what happened, but Sumi doesn’t have the Earth crystal.” 

요나는 쭈뼛대며 고개를 저었습니다. "전... 잘 모르겠지만 수미는 땅의 원석을 먹지 않았어요." 

So who ate which crystal? 

도대체 누가 어떤 원석을 먹었을까요?

Pause now to figure it out for yourself. 

영상을 멈추고 잠시 생각해 보세요. 

There’s no getting around it— this will take some trial and error. But that’s not a bad thing. 

아마 몇 번의 시도와 실패를 겪을 텐데 절대 잘못된 게 아닙니다. 

If we make a wrong guess, we’ll eventually reach a point where our conclusions contradict each other. 

만약 추리가 잘못되었다면 모순이 발견될 테고 

That would allow us to confirm that our initial guess was wrong and work from there. 

첫 번째 추측이 잘못된 것을 알게 될 겁니다. 

This is a technique known as proof by contradiction. 

그러면 다시 시작하세요 이것이 바로 귀류법입니다. 

The trick is in being strategic about where we begin our guessing. 

이 전략의 요령은 어디에서 추측을 시작하는지에 달렸습니다.

Some assumptions might not lead to contradictions without making further assumptions. 

어떤 추측은 더 많은 추측과 모순으로 이어지지 않습니다. 

We want to pick one that creates the most constraints on its own, 

따라서 제약이 많은 것을 선택하는 게 유리하죠. 

and thus gives us the most information when it turns out to be right or wrong. 

진실과 거짓이 판명되는 순간 가장 많은 정보를 얻기 때문이죠.

Take, for example, Sumi’s statement. 

예를 들어, 수미의 진술을 살펴봅시다. 

If we assume she’s telling the truth, we’d know the identity of both truth tellers. 

그녀의 말이 사실이라면 진실을 말하는 두 사람을 알 수 있습니다. 

Rikku would have the Water crystal, and since she’s not lying about him, Sumi would have Earth. 

수미 말 대로 리쿠는 물의 원석을 가졌을 테고 수미는 땅의 원석을 가졌겠죠. 

So Bella would have the Fire crystal, as Rikku says. 

벨라는 리쿠의 말대로 불의 원석을 가진 게 됩니다. 

But then Bella would have to be lying about Jonah having the Air crystal. 

그러면 요나가 바람의 원석이라는 벨라의 말은 거짓이어야 하는데 

And yet that’s the only remaining option. 

남은 하나와 일치하지 않네요.

This is a contradiction, and it tells us our initial assumption was wrong. 

이렇게 모순이 발생하면 첫 번째 추측이 틀린 것을 알 수 있죠. 

So now we can go back to the start, but with the added knowledge that Sumi is lying. 

처음으로 돌아 가볼까요? 하지만 이번엔 수미 말이 거짓이라는 단서가 있습니다. 

As a liar, Sumi must either have the Fire or Air crystal. 

그러면 불이나 바람의 원석 중 하나임을 확신할 수 있죠. 

That means Jonah was telling the truth about her, so he can’t have taken either of those. 

그러면 요나의 말은 진실이 되므로 불과 바람은 가질 수 없겠죠.

And that means Bella was lying about him, so she must also have either Fire or Air. 

그렇게 되면 벨라의 진술은 거짓이므로 벨라도 불이나 바람의 원석 중 하나를 가진 게 되고

Since Sumi was lying, Rikku can’t have taken the Water crystal— 

수미의 말은 거짓이니 리쿠가 물의 원석을 가질 수 없죠. 

the only one left who could have it is Jonah. 

따라서 물의 원석은 요나만 가질 수 있습니다. 

And because we’ve already identified the two liars, Rikku must have the Earth crystal. 

우리는 이미 거짓말쟁이 두 명을 알고 있으니 리쿠가 땅의 원석을 가진 게 되고 이로써

That means Bella has the Fire crystal and Sumi has Air. 

벨라는 불, 수미는 바람의 원석을 가진 게 됩니다. 

You manage to get them all in the proper containment fields just as the crystals’ magic begins to manifest. 

수습생들이 변하기 직전 원소의 힘을 제압하는 데 성공했어요. 

Compared with the difficult task of training these kids to control their new powers, figuring out who had which crystal was elementary.
