It’s June, just after a heavy rainfall, and the sky is filling with creatures we wouldn’t normally expect to find there. 

6월 어느 날, 많은 비가 쏟아진 후 예상치 못한 것들이 날아다닙니다.

At first glance, this might be a disturbing sight. 

처음 본다면 놀라울 광경입니다.

But for the lucky males and females of Solenopsis invicta, otherwise known as fire ants, it’s a day of romance. 

하지만 오늘은 흔히 불개미라고 알려진 붉은 불개미에게는 잊지 못할 날입니다. 

This is the nuptial flight, when thousands of reproduction-capable male and female ants, 

바로 결혼 비행입니다. 생식개미인 암개미와 수개미 수천 마리가 

called alates, take wing for the first and last time. 

처음이자 마지막으로 날개를 펼치는 것입니다.

But even for successful males who manage to avoid winged predators, this mating frenzy will prove lethal. 

하지만 고난과 역경을 이겨내고 짝짓기에 성공한 수개미에게조차도 남은 것은 오직 죽음뿐입니다.

And for a successfully mated female, her work is only beginning. 

반면 짝짓기에 성공한 암개미에게는 이제 시작일 뿐입니다. 

Having secured a lifetime supply of sperm from her departed mate, 

짝짓기에 성공하고 죽은 수개미로부터 일생동안 필요한 정자를 받아

our new queen must now single-handedly start an entire colony. 

우리의 새 여왕개미는 독자적으로 새로운 군체를 만들어야 합니다. 

Descending to the ground, she searches for a suitable spot to build her nest. 

여왕개미는 땅에 내려와 새 둥지에 적합한 땅을 탐색합니다.

Ideally, she can find somewhere with loose, easy-to-dig soil— like farmland already disturbed by human activity. 

부드럽고 파기 쉬운 흙이 제일 좋습니다. 사람들이 이미 헤쳐놓은 농지같은 곳이 좋습니다.

Once she finds the perfect spot, she breaks off her wings— creating the stubs that establish her royal status. 

적당한 땅을 찾으면 여왕개미는 날개를 뜯어냅니다. 날개 뜯은 흔적은 여왕개미임을 상징합니다.

Then, she starts digging a descending tunnel ending in a chamber. 

여왕개미는 굴을 파고 그 끝에 방을 만듭니다.

Here the queen begins laying her eggs, about ten per day, and the first larvae hatch within a week. 

하루에 십여 개의 알을 낳는데 일주일 안에 첫 번째 애벌레가 부화합니다.

Over the next three weeks, the new queen relies on a separate batch of unfertilized eggs to nourish both herself and her brood, 

앞으로 3주 동안은 여왕개미는 무수정란을 낳아서 자신과 종족을 위한 먹이로 삼습니다.

losing half her body weight in the process. 

이 때 여왕개미의 몸집이 반 이상 줄어듭니다.

Thankfully, after about 20 days, these larvae grow into the first generation of workers, 

20일 정도가 지나면 애벌레는 첫 번째 일개미 세대가 됩니다. 

eady to forage for food and sustain their shrunken queen. 

이들은 먹이를 찾고 힘없는 여왕개미를 보호합니다. 

Her daughters will have to work quickly though — returning their mother to good health is urgent. 

암개미들도 분주하게 움직이며 돕습니다. 여왕개미의 건강은 아주 중요하거든요. 

In the surrounding area, dozens of neighboring queens are building their own ant armies. 

인근 지역에서도 십여 마리의 다른 여왕 불개미들이 그들만의 집단을 형성합니다.

These colonies have peacefully coexisted so far, but once workers appear, a phenomenon known as brood-raiding begins. 

아직은 군집들이 평화롭게 공존하지만 일개미들이 태어나면 소위 개미의 약탈이 시작됩니다. 

Workers from nests up to several meters away begin to steal offspring from our queen. 

자신의 둥지로부터 수 미터까지 나온 일개미들은 다른 둥지의 애벌레를 약탈합니다. 

Our colony retaliates, but new waves of raiders from even further away overwhelm the workers. 

약탈당한 군체는 보복하지만 더 멀리 있는 다른 집단이 나타나 공격하고 약탈합니다.

Within hours, the raiders have taken our queen’s entire brood supply to the largest nearby nest— 

몇 시간안에 약탈자들은 재빠르게 애벌레를 모두 훔쳐 인근에서 가장 큰 둥지로 가겨갑니다.

and the queen’s surviving daughters abandon her. 

살아남은 암개미들은 여왕개미 곁을 떠납니다. 

Chasing her last chance of survival, the queen follows the raiding trail to the winning nest. 

여왕개미는 최후의 수단으로 약탈자를 추적해 둥지를 찾아냅니다.

She fends off other losing queens and the defending nest’s workers, fighting her way to the top of the brood pile. 

여왕개미는 다른 여왕개미들과 일개미들을 물리치며 꼭대기에 올라서기 위해 싸웁니다. 

Her daughters help their mother succeed where other queens fail— defeating the reigning monarch, and usurping the brood pile. 

이때 암개미들은 자신의 여왕개미가 새 둥지의 여왕개미를 물리치고 왕좌를 빼앗을 수 있도록 돕습니다.

Eventually, all the remaining challengers fail, until only one queen— and one brood pile— remains. 

결국 한 마리가 남을 때까지 이들의 전쟁은 계속됩니다. 

Now presiding over several hundred workers in the neighborhood’s largest nest, our victorious queen begins aiding her colony in its primary goal: 

승리한 여왕개미는 가장 큰 둥지에서 일개미 수백 마리를 거느리면서 군집의 최대 목표를 위해 나아 갑니다.

reproduction. For the next several years, the colony only produces sterile workers. 

바로 군집의 규모를 키우는 것이죠. 다음 몇 년 동안 군체에는 생식 능력이 없는 일개미만 태어납니다.

But once their population exceeds about 23,000, it changes course. 

하지만 둥지의 개체수가 이만 삼천여 마리 정도가 넘으면 상황이 바뀝니다.

From now on, every spring, the colony will produce fertile alate males and females. 

그때부터는 매년 봄마다 여왕 개미는 생식개미를 낳습니다.

The colony spawns these larger ants throughout the early summer, and returns to worker production in the fall. 

초여름이 될 무렵까지 덩치가 더 큰 이들은 더욱 성장하고 가을이 되면 다시 일개미가 태어납니다. 

After heavy rainfalls, these alates take to the skies, and spread their queen’s genes up to a couple hundred meters downwind. 

많은 비가 내리고 나면 생식개미들은 다시 결혼비행을 합니다. 이들은 바람을 타고 수백 미터까지 퍼져 나갈 수 있습니다. 

But to contribute to this annual mating frenzy, the colony must continue to thrive as one massive super-organism. 

매년 짝짓기 비행을 위해서는 군체는 하나의 거대한 초유기체성을 발현해야 합니다.

Every day, younger ants feed the queen and tend to the brood, while older workers forage for food and defend the nest. 

매일 젊은 일개미가 여왕개미에게 먹이를 바치고 알을 보살핍니다. 반면 더 성장한 일개미는 먹이를 찾고 둥지를 지킵니다.

When intruders strike, these older warriors fend them off using poisonous venom. 

둥지에 적이 들이 닥칠 때에는 이들 일개미는 개미산을 발사해서 둥지를 방어합니다.

After rainfalls, the colony comes together, using the wet dirt to expand their nest. 

비가 그치고 나면 군체는 함께 모여서 젖은 흙을 이용해서 둥지를 확장시킵니다.

And when a disastrous flood drowns their home, the sisters band together into a massive living raft— carrying their queen to safety. 

홍수로 둥지가 물에 잠기면 개미들은 여왕개미를 보호하기 위해 서로 모여서 큰 뗏목처럼 만듭니다. 

But no matter how resilient, the life of a colony must come to an end. 

하지만 아무리 군집 체계가 단단해도 군체는 쇠퇴하기 마련입니다. 

After about 8 years, our queen runs out of sperm and can no longer replace dying workers. 

8년 정도가 지나면 여왕개미는 생식 능력이 떨어져 더 이상 알을 낳지 못합니다. 

The nest’s population dwindles, and eventually, they’re taken over by a neighboring colony. 

군집의 규모가 줄어들면 결국 다른 군집에 점령당할 수 밖에 없습니다. 

Our queen’s reign is over, but her genetic legacy lives on. 

우리 여왕개미의 시대는 끝났지만 그 유전자는 결코 사라지지 않습니다.
