I think that at the time, Catwoman had a really cool pair of glasses in the Batman series that was on television. 

저는 그 당시 텔레비전에서 방영하던 배트맨 시리즈에 나오는 캣우먼이 쓴 안경이 정말 멋있다고 생각했어요.

And I wanted to be cool like her. 

저도 그렇게 되고 싶었죠.

It didn't occur to me that glasses were really a medical device. 

안경이 의료 기기라는 생각은 미처 하지 못했죠. 

When light rays reflect off an object and enter the eye through the cornea, 

빛이 사물에 반사되어 각막을 통해 눈에 들어오면

your retina converts this light into electrical impulses that are sent to the brain, 

눈의 망막은 이 빛을 전기 자극으로 변환해 뇌에 보내고, 

which interprets the impulses and allows you to understand what you're seeing. 

그러면 뇌는 이 자극을 처리하여 우리가 무엇을 보고 있는지 알려줍니다. 

Eyeglasses help you see. 

안경은 우리가 볼 수 있게 도와주죠. 

The earliest forms of eye gear can be traced back 4,000 years. 

초기의 시각 보조 기기는 무려 4000년 전으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 

Cultures that needed to adapt to climates that were snowy created eye shields, 

눈이 많이 내리는 곳 문화의 사람들은 기후에 적응하기 위해 보호 안경이 필요했고

and they were made of bone and animal hides. 

동물의 가죽과 뼈로 만들어 사용했습니다. 

They had small slits for people to see through, but no lenses. 

볼 수 있게 작은 틈을 내었지만 렌즈는 없었습니다.

The first vision aid was called a reading stone and was invented over 1,000 years ago. 

최초의 시력 보조 기구는 "리딩 스톤"이라는 1000여년도 더 된 옛날에 발명된 기구였습니다. 

It's not exactly clear who invented the first eyeglasses, but many people attribute it to the Italians. 

정확히 누가 최초의 안경을 발명했는지는 확실하지 않지만 많은 사람들은 이탈리아인이 발명했다고들 하죠.

Early versions of eyeglasses were called rivet spectacles. 

초기의 안경은 "리벳 안경"이라고 불렸습니다.

They were two magnifying glasses that were hinged together at the bridge of the nose. 

돋보기 두개가 콧대에서 연결된 형태의 안경이었죠.

It took some time for eyeglasses to land on the perfect design. 

안경이 완전한 모양을 갖추기까지엔 시간이 조금 걸렸습니다. 

They didn't really have sides, which are also called temples, or arms, until about the 17th century. 

17세기 정도까지는 우리가 안경 다리라고 부르는 지지대도 없었습니다. 

Modern-day eyeglasses feature a pair of rims that hold corrective lenses, 

현대의 안경의 모습은 시력 교정 렌즈를 감싸는 두 개의 테두리와, 

a bridge that connects the rims, sides that slide behind the ears, 

그 테두리를 잇는 브릿지, 귀 뒤로 밀어넣는 안경 다리,

hinges that connect the sides to the frames, and on some glasses, a pair of temple tips for behind the ear comfort. 

테두리와 안경 다리를 잇는 끝 부분, 그리고 어떤 안경은 귀를 편안하게 해주는 안경 다리 받침대가 있습니다. 

In American culture, 20th century cinema helped popularize eyeglasses. 

미국에서는 20세기 들어 영화계의 영향으로 안경이 더 대중화 되었습니다. 

Audiences would see glamorous actresses and actors donning glasses to take on a different persona. 

관객들은 매력 넘치는 배우들이 각기 다른 페르소나를 연기할 때 안경을 쓰는걸 보았죠.

Sometimes a pair of glasses became popularized by the actual person that was wearing them, 

간혹 안경을 쓴 실제 인물 덕분에 그 안경이 인기를 얻은 적도 있었고

and then that personality trait was projected into the actual device. 

그 인물의 개인적 특성까지 안경에 투영되는 경우도 있었습니다. 

You had the aviator glasses, which showed a forward-thinking, adventurous type of person. 

에비에이터 디자인은 진보적인 생각과 모험심을 가진 사람을 상징하죠. 

Glasses with heavy frames signified intelligence or nerdiness. 

두꺼운 뿔테 안경은 지성을 상징하거나 범생이를 나타날 때도 있고요. 

Wayfarers signified this kind of nerdy punk, the outlaw, the misfit. 

웨이페어러 디자인은 시시한 녀석이나 무법자, 소외자를 나타내죠.

Glasses have become so popular as a fashion device that some people actually don glasses without a prescription lens at all, 

안경은 이제 패션 아이템의 하나로 자리 잡았고 어떤 사람들은 각기 다른 매력을 보이고 싶어서 

because they want to portray a certain attribute about themselves. 

도수가 아예 없는 안경을 사서 쓰고 다니기도 합니다.

Glasses are a lifeline to people. 

사람들에게 안경은 생명줄과도 같습니다. 

People that can't see well enough to drive, well enough to cook, well enough to read rely on glasses for maintaining their lives. 

눈이 나빠서 운전 할 때, 요리 할 때, 책을 읽을 때 도움이 필요한 사람들은 안경에 그들의 생활을 의지합니다. 

And there's lots of other objects in our society that have been created to help overcome various physical obstacles. 

우리 사회에는 신체적 장애를 뛰어넘기 위해 발명된 물건들이 여럿 있는데요.

And it's only the eyeglasses that have catapulted to that fashion statement. 

하지만 그 중 안경만이 패션 아이템으로 자리 잡았습니다. 

Wouldn't it be wonderful if anything that we use, 

우리가 인류를 돕기 위해 발명한 다른 것들도 

any device that we've invented to help our humanity could also be elevated in the same way? 

이렇게 다른 방향으로도 사용 될 수 있다면 정말 멋지지 않을까요?
